Safecoat Paints & Sealers
Planet Hardwood is a stocking distributor of AFM Safecoat, a manufacturer of a wide range of paints, finishes, cleaning and maintenance products. Safecoat is dedicated to providing for the safest, most toxic-free environments using the highest quality, most highly refined materials available. Their products have been proven in use by everyone from homeowners to hospitals. People who want to avoid or can’t tolerate toxic chemicals have used their products for over 25 years.
Twenty five years ago, chemical sensitivity was not yet widely accepted as authentic and yet Safecoat made that their core undertaking: to remove all toxic materials from their products whether regulated or not. All the major paint manufacturers and big box private labels produce millions of gallons of earth-harmful and people-harmful products, and then add a “green” paint to satisfy a market trend, or to minimally satisfy an architectural specification. Toxic ingredients are omitted from their Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) because they fall under the percentage that the government deems necessary for mandatory disclosure. Safecoat goes beyond the simplistic “sound bite” advertising with a deeper commitment to people who are chemically sensitive or environmentally ill.
The focus of the EPA is on the chemicals that cause outdoor air pollution. Many of these pollutants are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC”s), which means that they are chemically unstable. They turn into gas or combine with other chemicals… then you breathe them. Not all VOC’s are harmful to people. The EPA only defines VOC’s harmful to people as those that contribute to outdoor smog, so even chemicals as toxic as acetone (nail polish remover) can be included in “zero VOC” products. Indoor air pollution can be 10 times worse than Los Angeles on a bad day… even here in Vermont!
In addition to paints, Safecoat makes unique products that actually encapsulate and contain off-gassing from plywood, paint and carpet. Their concrete sealer is tough enough to stand up to chain store traffic.
