Planet Hardwood is a DBA of Ligna U.S.A. Inc., a locally owned Vermont business incorporated in 1997. Planet Hardwood is a bricks-and-mortar business that started with exclusively wood products, which was congruent with our belief that wood is the most wholesome and environmentally friendly building material. We have provided wood flooring for corporate headquarter buildings, high-rises and hotels, chain stores, loft conversions and residential clients throughout North America. I personally helped two mills receive FSC certification and have been involved in environmentally responsible building material and design since the 1970's. We have also consulted to flooring mills around the world in quality control, product development, marketing, and environmental issues.
In 2003, we started adding other products like Safecoat Paint, TimberSil Decking, American Clay, Woca oil, and wood, Paperstone™, and bamboo countertops. In expanding our product offering, we became aware of the negative health impact to people from the cumulative exposure to the toxic chemicals surrounding us in most interior spaces in America. This contaminated chemical environment is created by the use and presence of common building and household products, which go largely unregulated and unmonitored. Nearly all of the chemistry surrounding us has never been tested (or tested in combination with other chemicals) for the long term effects from exposure. One of the bulletins from AFM Safecoat states that the average American interior, where Americans spend over 90% of their time, is 10 times more polluted that Los Angeles on an average day. Ten times! What if they’re only half right?
We have arrived at the opinion that interior air pollution is the biggest health hazard in America that flies completely under the radar. There is no major government agency, NGO, or non-profit currently funding or lobbying for comprehensive studies on the impact of these commonly used pollutants. Additionally, products don’t have to report or reveal ingredients under the percentage that the government deems harmful. Do you feel protected yet? How much poison is enough? Ask the exploding numbers of people with asthma, chemical sensitivities, or parents of autistic children.
Planet Hardwood is committed to providing products for your home or business that do not deteriorate the health of the people occupying that space, or the health of the planet. Additionally, we look for businesses and products that represent that commitment above and beyond the motive to sell more goods or satisfy a current trend. We have a 6,000 ft2 showroom here in St. George that has been described as one of the best flooring showrooms in America (we think it is the best), and can address any issues or concerns with homeowners, spec writers, architects, construction managers and general contractors.
